Portugal Suspends Ronaldo After Walkout From Camp
The federation said its Non-Professional Section voted on Oct. 9 to launch an investigation into the circumstances of the forward’s departure. It added that a further suspension was imposed on top of the automatic one already in force: “Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of initiation, a non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined, and the proceedings were given urgent status,” the federation said.
No final sanction has been announced. The FPF said the details of the case will stay confidential until the inquiry concludes. The matter has been referred to its Disciplinary Investigation Commission, which has yet to issue a ruling.
The dispute. Ronaldo left the squad in Copenhagen before the Nations League match against Denmark after clashing with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time. By Ronaldo’s account, Jesus had agreed he would sit out the games against Norway and Denmark to manage his fitness, then later told him he would get 30 minutes against Norway.
“I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said in a statement. “The manager had broken his word to me.”
On the pitch. Portugal won all three matches during the international break, and Goncalo Ramos, who took Ronaldo’s place, scored three goals.
Apology. Ronaldo has since apologized to teammates and supporters and said he will accept whatever punishment the federation hands down. “I recognize that I should not have left the national team camp,” Ronaldo said, though he also criticized Jesus over the events that led to his exit.
