Ronaldo Hit With 30-Day Ban, USD286 Fine After Quitting Camp
The FPF’s disciplinary council upheld the charge against the 41-year-old, who walked out of Portugal’s Copenhagen camp on Sept. 30, one day before the UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark. It ruled that Ronaldo knowingly committed a disciplinary breach under Article 160(1) of the federation’s disciplinary regulations.
“Based on this, it is decided to impose a 30-day suspension, in addition to a financial fine of 2.5 accounting units, equivalent to 255 euros (two hundred and fifty-five euros),” the federation said.
Ronaldo had been under an automatic provisional suspension since he left the camp on Sept. 30. The federation launched formal disciplinary proceedings on Oct. 9 and imposed a second, separate provisional suspension. The case was sent for investigation the next day.
The announcement left open whether the time Ronaldo has already served under those provisional suspensions will count toward the 30-day sanction.
His exit followed friction with Jesus over his place in the squad. Ronaldo had stayed on the bench, unused, during Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway on Sept. 27.
After leaving, Ronaldo issued a lengthy statement accusing Jesus of breaking promises about his playing time. He also apologized for leaving the camp without permission. The veteran forward said the FPF should decide how to punish him, and he stressed that retiring from international football had never crossed his mind.
